Hey, Kyle, that's awesome. :) I started at 285 myself in October of 2001. I reached my goal of 190 by September 2002 (okay, I'm about 210 again, but that's not bad over two and a half years, I think... and I'm working on getting back under 200 by July 15th). :) It takes time and you have to stick to it but I swear, you can do it. My friend Colin, who got me started there, went from 394 (yes, just shy of 400) to 197... literally half his weight... in roughly a year and a half.
What worked for me was a program called Harvey Brooker's Weight Loss for Men. It's a lot like Weight Watchers. No gimmicks, no weird foods, nothing to buy (aside from the initial membership), just sensible eating. Reading labels. Writing down what you ate to keep track. And being weighed every Sunday morning before the meetings. ACCOUNTABILITY IS THE KEY. What keeps you honest is knowing you'll be facing another human being at the end of the week, no matter how forgiving he is. Knowing you are going to be caught out keeps you honest.
Unfortunately, Harvey's meetings are in Toronto. Rather a long drive from Ottawa. But his plan is freely available... we have permission to distribute it. If you'd care to see it, I can show it to you. Or you can just go to his website (lemme look it up...). If you make appointments to meet your doctor once a week to be weighed, and you follow the plan, I guarantee you'll get there! It's science.
